Denmark won in overtime thriller
It was a hot day in London, Ontario. The South Korean team where looking sharp in the warmups, but the spirit of the danish team was ever growing, people laughing and joking in the busride to the fields.
The game turned out to be a regular thriller, that no movie director could have made any better.
The Danes led out looking sharp and focused, playing smart and good offensive lacrosse. By halftime the score was 7-1 in our favour. That is a nice way to start a second half, and the Danes where looking for an easy cruise over the Korean peninsula.
But the South Korean hearts had alot of courage still in them. They came out to the second half as a completely changed team, really wanting to take their chances. And so they did.
By the fourth quarter, the Korean team had us tied 8 -8. You might wonder how a team can throw away a 6 goal lead over a period of 30 minutes, and Im sure that the coaches are thinking the same right now. I personally think that the Korean team looked sharp, and they where fighting really hard to get back in the game. They deserved the tie.
BUT. The tie was no enough for them. they went up 9 - 8 with a minute left to play. Only a last second goal from Dane Hansen, with 14 seconds left on the clock, tied the game to go to overtime.
A quick overtime goal took the Danes one up, but to make matters even more exiting, the Danish team decided that they would play man down the rest of the overtime, sending a man to the penalty box.
With a great man-down defence, and a good save from our goalie, the Danes took the game.
The South Korean team was coached by legendary coach John Haus, a fact that Coach Cone will keep as a treasured memory for ever. |
