In a game of penalties, Denmark comes second
A weird game was played today. Latvia came out looking to break our
winning streak. In a low scoring first half, the teams seemed to be
rather equal, with luck un the Latvian side. Denmark had several
chances, and the ball just did not want to go in. The half ended 4-2 in
Latvian favor, not quite summing up the game.
As third quarter started, the refs came out with a mission to destroy
the game. I don't think that either team had more than 30 seconds of
consecutive play. Everything was a whistle, and every whistle was a
penalty. The heat was a beast, and
seemed to hurt us more than it did them. With the game being
artificially prolonged by the spotlight crawing refs, and the Danish
team behind on goals, Latvia went in to the strategic kind of lacrosse.
(the kind where you would rather chop down the forest with a salted
hering than having to endure any more of the sly Italian soccer-style)
Anyway, when a team is awarded 17,5 minutes (did I mention the refs?)
of penalty time, it is hard to win a match. Man down for almost a
quarter will kill most teams.
Even with all the above excuses, team Denmark should have played better
lacrosse. The best team won today, and we congratulate Latvia.
Tomorow we play Finland, who are looking strong. The result today
has not taken away our chances of winning our group. A win against
Finland will put both teams on a 3-1 streak, with us as the heads up
winner.
